Book review the diamond eye6/12/2023 Still reeling from war wounds and devastated by loss, Mila finds herself isolated and lonely in the glittering world of Washington, DC–until an unexpected friendship with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and an even more unexpected connection with a silent fellow sniper offer the possibility of happiness. When news of her three hundredth kill makes her a national heroine, Mila finds herself torn from the bloody battlefields of the eastern front and sent to America on a goodwill tour. Given a rifle and sent to join the fight, Mila must forge herself from studious girl to deadly sniper–a lethal hunter of Nazis known as Lady Death. In 1937 in the snowbound city of Kiev (now known as Kyiv), wry and bookish history student Mila Pavlichenko organizes her life around her library job and her young son–but Hitler’s invasion of Ukraine and Russia sends her on a different path. The New York Times bestselling author of The Rose Code returns with an unforgettable World War II tale of a quiet bookworm who becomes history’s deadliest female sniper. So, here we go! ~~GOODREADS DESCRIPTION~~ But, I didn’t quite enjoy this as much as the others. After having loved the other three, I had high hopes for this one. Please tolerate! Tessa dare castles ever after6/12/2023 Ransom is certainly my hero but then I do have a soft spot for scarred, emotionally wounded heroes. Little potbellied drunkards, those summer raindrops, chortling on their way to earth and crashing open with glee. Fat, heavy drops of summer rain- the kind that always struck her as vaguely lewd and debauched. This is one of my favourite descriptions: She brings each scene to life with such vivid imagery. I love Tessa Dare’s writing… so rich in warmth, emotion, and humour. The first book, ROMANCING THE DUKE is enchanting, romantic, sexy and funny and I was totally captivated from the first page to the last! I didn’t think anything could possibly match Tessa Dare’s fabulous Spindle Cove series but her new series, Castles Ever After, promises to be just as wonderful. What fairy tales are left over for an impoverished twenty-six year-old woman who’s never even been kissed? Now Izzy’s given up yearning for romance. Rescued from drudgery by charming prince? The storybooks offered endless possibilities.Īnd as she grew older, Izzy crossed them off. She never doubted romance would be in her future, too. Īs the daughter of a famed author, Isolde Ophelia Goodnight grew up on tales of brave knights and fair maidens. In the first in Tessa Dare’s captivating Castles Ever After series, a mysterious fortress is the setting for an unlikely love.

Girl at War by Sara Nović6/11/2023 It is about a ten-year-old croatian girl's coming of age in zagreb, in the midst of civil war. her writing is fluid, her characters are vivid, and she brings a strong perspective and voice to subject matter that is serious and important while resisting the temptation to play it sentimental. This is one of those debut novels that makes you really really excited for the future of fiction.Įverything about this book is phenomenal. They'd heard about Bosnia the Olympics had been there in '84. "It's terrible what happened there," people would say when I let slip my home country and explained that it was the one next to Bosnia. In America I'd learned quickly what it was okay to talk about and what I should keep to myself.

Naomi novik dragon series6/10/2023 We meet Captain Will Laurence and see that he is honourable, intelligent and battle-wise, with a crew prepared to fight for their Captain and Country. Whilst Temeraire is listed for a general audience and has broad appeal to adults, it is also suitable, engaging and appealing to young adults and adolescents.īefore the first page has turned, the reader is drawn into the early 1800s, on a British Royal Navy Ship, mid-way through a battle. This novel was highly recommended to me by a wonderful teacher-librarian, who knew I was seeking a novel with depth, intrigue and dragons, and immediately retrieved this novel for me from her Young Adult shelves. Mrs dalloway gutenberg6/10/2023 Today I leave you with this beautiful cover and the first page of the novel. This one does a good job of capturing both the euphoric joy and profound sadness of the novel. Woolf fans may be familiar with this style, as most of Woolf’s first book covers were designed by Bell. The cover pictured is the original and my favourite, designed by Woolf’s sister Vanessa Bell, who was a wonderful artist herself. (I love Ulysses too it will have its day.) This year I am taking matters into my own hands, and declare Mrs Dalloway Week open here at Absurd Reviews. There are events to mark it, especially in London, but it is yet to reach Bloomsday status. While Bloomsday (which celebrates James Joyce’s Ulysses) is widely celebrated every year, Dalloway Day is a far more modest affair. Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway is set in London on a Wednesday in the middle of June in 1923, which would make the date June 13 th. |
